Lost Members of the 458th and Associated Others

Richard E. Leibel
DOD: 01/26/2018

Hi Mike,

I wish this was a different message but I need to let you know that Dad passed away yesterday morning. He hadn't been feeling well for a few weeks. We had taken him to his doctor a couple of times with no real diagnosis as to the cause of his discomfort. And on the 16th I witnessed him acting very strangely. He was in a very confused state. We got him to the hospital and after a week of tests and watching him decline rather rapidly the testing indicated an old stroke and a recent acute stroke. We were able to get him to a hospice in-patient facility Wednesday night and I was called at 6:30 yesterday morning that he had passed. Both the hospice nurse and all of us were shocked that he passed so quickly. We all thought we had at least a few more days with him. But the blessing is that they were able to make him comfortable which he was not at the hospital and I think he preferred to leave us privately. That would be his way.

His time spent with the you and the 458th Sea Tigers, and the adventures that the book brought his way were absolutely some of his happier times these past few years. I think that took the edge off his missing Mom and I have and always will be grateful for the friendship and kinship he knew with the 458th.

Needless to say this is all so very sad. And in some ways so sudden. He had been slowing down but otherwise maintaining an independent and active life.

I would appreciate it if you could let the other members of 458th know of Dad's passing.

We miss him so much.

Jean

Robert Arno Henry Felde
DOD: 02/03/2011 Cheyenne, WY

Mr. Robert Arno Henry Felde, 71, of Greeley, Colorado, passed away Thursday, February 3, 2011, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cheyenne.

Mr. Felde was born September 3, 1939, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, a son of the late Fred and Ruth (Mundt) Felde.

A Purple Heart recipient, Robert was a combat veteran serving two tours of duty for the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He retired as the Chief Warrant Officer 2 after 24 years of honorable service. During his service in Vietnam, he was exposed to Agent Orange and because of this exposure and effects it had on his health, Robert became an advocate for those combat veterans who returned home from active duty. He was actively involved in the Wounded Warrior Program and volunteered to drive veterans from Greeley to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Cheyenne. He also supported the local VFW and served as a member of the Honor Guard. He was a patriotic man who loved his country and also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors where he loved to hunt and fish.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Carol (Schuette) Felde of Greeley, CO; four children, Bruce Ronald Felde of Morgantown, WV, Keith William Felde of Stephens City, VA, Glen Thomas Felde of Ft. Leonardwood, MO, and Deanna L. Felde of Greeley, CO; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Suzanne Fenn of Howards Grove, WI, and Shirley Aschenbach of Minnesota.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Felde.
